On the safety and legality of the comma one
The comma one will not turn your car into an autonomous vehicle. It is an advanced driver assistance system. To put it in traditional auto manufacturer terms, it is "lane keep assist" and "adaptive cruise control"
Our supported car, the Honda 2016/17 Civic with Sensing already has these features. But as anyone with the car will tell you, they aren't very good. The comma.ai system is just much better. It provides no new functionality, so it should be legal everywhere the Honda systems are; it is an aftermarket upgrade.
With all these Tesla autopilot like systems, it is very important that you pay attention. This system does not remove any of the driver's responsibilities from the task of driving. We provide two safety guarantees:
1. Enforced disengagements. Step on either pedal or press the cancel button to retake full manual control of the car immediately.
2. Actuation limits. While the system is engaged, the actuators are constrained to operate within reasonable limits; the same limits used by the stock system on the Honda.
At comma.ai, we are working as hard as we can to deliver the best possible user experience. Onward to the launch.

I believe comma.ai will be the first to reach at level 4 vehicle autonomy though not mainly focused on level 4 autonomy now.
ReplyDeleteYou might want to look at the timeline of A.I. R&D by the human race.. A.I. is mostly just used with simple back-data in finance and small pattern recognition.
DeleteWhat is the legality of removing your rearview mirror for this? I believe many states require a rearview mirror.
ReplyDeleteRefer to http://ecomodder.com/wiki/index.php/Mirror_Laws_by_State_(U.S.)
DeleteThat doesn't answer the question. Most states require a rear view mirror that shows at least 200 ft distance, so by posting that link you are saying it's illegal in most states? Which brings another question, why wasn't the comma on software built simoly into an aftermarket replacement rear view mirror?
DeleteA rearview mirror also includes the side mirrors. Just looking at some of the states, some say a mirror is required, some say two, some say a left one and another one (either center or right). None say a center rearview mirror is required, as long as you have left and right ones.
DeleteMight I add that yes, you'd technically have to adjust the side mirrors to be able to see 200 ft behind you to remain compliant with the law. A lot of people's side mirrors are probably already set that way or close to it, even though it's not the proper way.
DeleteThe wiki article perfectly describes rear-view mirrors as being unnecessary in all states. One must actually read it though, and understand what it's saying.
